Do you follow Jesus ‘on the way’?

Is the Gospel of Mark only a “condensed” version of the life of Christ? What does it have to offer us that the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John do not? Join Dr. Tim Gray in this powerful fourteen-part series to discover the Gospel of Mark like  never before.

  • Immerse yourself in this action-packed Gospel that offers Saint Peter’s account of Christ’s life and teaching.
  • Delve deep into the theme of the “way” and true discipleship and see how Jesus reveals his identity in authoritative action and word.
  • Consider more deeply Jesus’s teaching on the Temple and walk with Jesus to Gethsemane and the Way of the Cross as Mark describes it.
  • Open yourself to profound reflection on the shortest of the four gospels.

Combining the insights of renown Catholic theologian Dr. Tim Gray, with the masterful artistry of the Augustine Institute, this Catholic Bible study series uses the Church’s rich tradition of  lectio  divina  to help you better understand and better pray with the Gospel of Mark.

PROGRAM

PROGRAM

Session 1:  Saint Mark the Evangelist

Dr. Tim Gray introduces us to the Gospel of Mark as the gospel of action. Using outside sources, other books of the Bible, and the gospel itself, he gives an account of the author, Saint Mark, and his connection with Saint Peter and the Christians of Rome. (Running time 30:30)

Session 2:  Prepare the Way of the Lord

The opening lines of Saint Mark manifest that Jesus is, without a doubt, the Son of God. He is the one for whom the way is being prepared. And as he sets out on that way, fulfilling the prophets and the Old Testament prefigurements, he points us to the true path of salvation. (Running time 29:53)

Session 3:  Come Follow Behind Me

In this session we cover the actions which follow our Lord’s Baptism and temptation in the wilderness. Having been thus prepared, he enters into Galilee and begins the work of regathering the scattered people of God. (Running time 31:09)

Session 4:  Feasting and Fasting

In this session, we will discover how Jesus slowly reveals his divine identity and his authority from God to forgive man his sins and to heal.  As his mission unfolds, Jesus increasingly vexes the Pharisees and the scribes by his words and deeds.  Their opposition mounts as they stubbornly hang onto their own interpretation of the law of Moses and refuse to embrace Jesus’s mission of mercy. (Running time 30:34)

Session 5:  Binding the Strong Man

Jesus is the mighty savior who rescues us from the snares of the devil and from sin. He saves us from oppression, and he saves us for the intimate relationship of discipleship. (Running time 31:38)

Session 6:  The Parable of the Sower

In the Old Testament the voice of the Lord calls the cosmos into existence and shakes all creation with its power. In the New Testament Jesus, the Incarnate Word of God, speaks with the same power and authority. But his word can only bear fruit in our lives if we have ears to hear. (Running time 31:06)

Session 7: Faith, Not Fear

When the storms of life hit, we have two choices. Will we focus on the wind and waves and give in to fear? Or will we keep our eyes firmly fixed on Christ in faith? (Running time 31:22)

Session 8: The Mystery of the Bread

The mystery of the bread, the Eucharistic Presence of God, begins to be revealed in the miracles of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Jesus reveals himself as the divine giver of a new manna. Yet, as Isaiah foretold, the disciples struggle to understand the significance of his deeds. (Running time 31:04)

Session 9: The Way of Discipleship

This session presents a concentrated teaching about the nature of discipleship. Bookended by two stories of healing blind men, the events recorded in these verses show Jesus endeavoring to heal the spiritual eyes of his disciples. (Running time 30:49)

Session 10: Jesus and the Temple

As Jesus begins his final week before his Passion, he has stern warnings for those who would oppose God by rejecting his beloved son. Will we also reject his words, or will we heed the call to be faithful by rendering unto God the things that are God’s? (Running time 31:40)

Session 11: Signs of the End

The Temple in Jerusalem was God’s glorious dwelling with his chosen people, but it was only a house made by human hands. The new Temple, not made with hands, is the resurrected body of Jesus. He gives himself to us and dwells in our hearts, so that we may someday dwell with him in Heaven. (Running time 30:55)

Session 12: The Servant of the Lord

In the garden of Gethsemane, the hour of Jesus finally arrives—the hour of betrayal and suffering, but also the hour of salvation and glory. Christ the king will be falsely accused, mocked, and tortured, but he will ascend the throne of the cross to draw the whole world into his reign of love. (Running time 29:45)

Session 13: Jesus’s Suffering, Death, and Resurrection

Those who witness the death and resurrection of the Lord go on to bear testimony to him not only by the words, but by their lives and also their deaths, so that all may know the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. How will you bear witness to this good news? (Running time 30:38)

Session 14: Questions and Answers

Now, as we come to the end of this study, we can pause to reflect on some questions that have arisen during our journey through Mark’s Gospel. (Running time 32:09)
